Britannia OUR HISTORY

We are now over 43 years old and we look forward to our next period of growth. Although many of our members are spread around the world, we still have a healthy attendance at our monthly meetings.

Our origins came from the Britannia Masonic Club founded in 1960 where British Masons met and socialized and from which, with the approval of the Most Wor. Harry Ostrov, a dispensation was applied for to the Grand Lodge of the State of New York in order to form a Lodge. Our sponsor was Sagamore-Naphthali Lodge No. 371 in the Fourth Manhattan District.

We were Consecrated Britannia Lodge No.1166 on June 12th 1964, with the St John’s Lodge No1 “George Washington” bible on our altar, in the presence of many distinguished Masons representing the Grand Lodges of New York, Scotland, and England.

Our first Master, Wor. Ralph Bell and Wardens John Eddy and Alfred Marsden, laid a firm foundation, from which Britannia members have provided excellent leadership in the craft. The Lodge has produced Four District Deputy Grand Masters, Six Grand Representatives, Four Presidents of the 4th Manhattan District Square Club and numerous other Masonic Leaders, all of whom make us proud. Our meetings are blessed with numerous visitors, from which many affiliations have resulted.

We extend our deep gratitude and thanks to all our Masonic friends who have helped us grow during the past years and particularly to all the Officers and Brethren of the Lodge for their unselfish devotion and hard work throughout these years.
